We have been working on learning long division through various methods in math. The parent note that went home last week explained the methods. The homework for tonight involves the Expanded Notation Method and the Place Value Section Method. Each student is bringing home an example of each method tonight for a guide as to how these should be solved that were completed in class today. The end goal for long division is the same as the multiplication : each student can choose their method of solving. At this point, each method needs to be learned and practiced until the "shortcut" method (which is the traditional one). I have included a picture from our manual with an example of each method as well:
We have watched this you tube video clip as well in class that many found helpful if you would like to view it at home. This includes a detailed think aloud of the place value section method:
PLACE VALUE SECTION METHOD
EXPANDED NOTATION METHOD
Please continue to practice basic multiplication and division facts at home as well. We will be utilizing the mad minutes tests after Christmas break to assess our progress in each.
After Christmas break, we will be having a Tuesday math tutoring class held weekly after school. If your child could benefit from the skill being taught that week, I will send a note and permission slip home with them on Monday of that week. You will then need to send that back signed the following morning in order for your child to participate in the after school tutoring held that week. Mrs. Snyder will be teaching these sessions. You will need to pickup your child after the tutoring time in order for them to participate since these will be held after school.
Please, as always, feel free to call me or email me with any questions or concerns.
