This week we have implemented some changes to our regular routines to "get ready" for fifth grade. We have been writing in our planners in the morning as is the routine next year. For the first couple of months of fifth grade, the planner needs to be signed as well so your child may ask you to sign theirs to get into the habit of having you check it. We also are going to be writing a summary each night after our reading of our baggie books. Fifth graders have written these all year and our students will be ready to write about their reading when the time comes next year. A yellow mini legal pad is going back and forth with your child and their book and this will serve as their summary recording document. They will date the entry and ask for your signature when it is complete. We will no longer use the bags and logs, but, just the book and summary pad for now. We also will celebrate our students who have completed their work in fifth grade style to encourage everyone to complete all assignments and homework. Hopefully these small changes will help in a big way to have students get used to routines that are typical of fifth graders.
Please encourage your child to continue to work hard daily and try their best. This time of the year can be tough for some to stay focused and on track. We have a lot of time left yet for a lot of learning to take place.
Tomorrow is the last day to bring in anything for the school carnival- please make sure you get your donations in. I am sure the parent board would love extra hands at the carnival as well.....if you are planning on coming anyway and can help for a bit, please let me know and I will get you in contact with the right person to get you signed up.
Next week we will be starting nonfiction writing as well as math RTI. We will continue working through unit 6 in math and move on to biographies in reading. Hope you are planning on the carnival this weekend - should be fun!!
