What have we been up too?

I could not believe when I looked at our site, it had been this long :( You need an update......

In writing- we are working diligently through our literary essay unit.  These are completely a new type of writing for us. We have been using short stories to really read "hard" and then try to determine the theme of the story.  The theme is the underlying meaning or life lesson that we gather from reading it.  Before the theme is a definite, it has to be tested to see if there is enough evidence in the story to support it in our writing.  The essay consists of an introduction where the theme is introduced, a body where the evidence from the story is linked to the theme, and a conclusion where a connection is made to the writer's life. Ask your child what literary essay they are writing now.

In math - we have finished up our unit on word problems and have moved on to some basic algebra.  A family letter was sent home explaining the basic concepts that are going to be taught during this unit. Your child should continue to practice multiplication and division facts for fluency. The next week or two we will be continuing on through unit 4 as well as starting to work on fractions. Discovery Education online has a great resource for families to help explain some of the new math we are working with.  You can find math portion of the homework help center Homework Help

In reading, we have been focusing our studies on Black History month.  Some of us are working on reading a play while another group recently recorded their readers theater.  A third group focused on the life of Jesse Owens.  It has been very informative and interesting to all learn while working on our reading  skills as well.

Please continue to have your child read their baggie book each night. Thanks for sending them every day respectful and ready to learn! We have an awesome room :)
